North South Carrier Water Transfer Project
Challenge
The North-South Carrier (NSC) water transfer project in Botswana, a 360km strategic water transfer system between the Letsibogo and Dikgatlhong dams, and Gaborone and other areas, has effected extensive socio-economic improvements in Gaborone.
The project was the government’s solution to serious water supply challenges based on inadequate local resources and robust socio-economic growth since independence. With two of the three phases of the NSC now completed, regional economic growth and quality of life in Botswana have been significantly enhanced – and a major water supply catastrophe has been averted in Gaborone.
Solution
The second phase of the project, NSC-2, on which Bigen started working in 2012, entailed completion of a water transfer strategy feeding on various dams, existing or newly emerging from the first phase completed in 1999. This includes four pumping systems.
From the start, the Botswana government relied extensively on Bigen as the employer’s representative for guidance as to the best possible technical solutions for NSC-2. The Group successfully met many challenges in terms of planning, logistics and construction, and maintained a high level of innovation and problem solving with regard to both construction and aesthetics.
For this project, Bigen won the annual Best International Project award from the Consulting Engineers South Africa in 2015.
