Mkuze integrated Agri-based rural development programme

Challenge

Rural development is regarded as the actions and initiatives taken to improve communities’ living standards in non-urban areas. These areas are usually characterised by a low ratio of inhabitants in wide-open spaces where agricultural activities are prominent, while economic activities relate mainly to food and raw materials.

TSB appointed Bigen to provide services regarding a pre-feasibility study for a mega integrated infrastructure programme in the geographic location of Mkuze.

Solution

Bigen, having exceptional expertise and full capability in infrastructure development, including agriculture and water and sanitation, made strategic decisions to approach the project as a comprehensive rural development programme, including significant community and municipal infrastructure development.

More than 8 000ha of potential development land was transferred to the Sibuyele Ekhaya Communal Property Trust (SECPT) as part of the restitution process. And any economic development within the area contributed significantly toward poverty alleviation, reducing inequality, and creating job opportunities for the poor communitiies living within its borders.

The agricultural development programme acted as an enabler for the mega integrated infrastructure development programme.

Water availability posed a significant challenge in the area, and Bigen went further to complete a pre-feasibility study and assisted the SECPT community in acquiring a water license.
