Kwale Mineral Sands Project

Challenge

Kwale, the first major mining development in Kenya, extracts heavy minerals which are transported to Mombasa and exported via the Likoni port terminal. In 2014, the contractor appointed to fabricate the conveyors and ship loader at the terminal could not continue and Bigen in partnership with Prodelko was appointed to take over and manage the project to completion, which would include:

  • Procurement of equipment.
  • Detailed instrumentation and control systems design.
  • Project and construction management.
  • Trial erection of substructures.
  • Marine freighting of components and equipment from Durban to Mombasa.
  • Erection on site.
  • Cold and hot commissioning, including loading of the first export shipment.
  • Contract administration and recovery of VAT payments on export content.

Solution

Bigen, appointed by the Kwale Project management as “best of breed” expertise to effectively manage the required infrastructure development and minimise technical risk, successfully delivered on this unique project. The project scope included trial erection of substructures in Durban and then chartering marine freighting of the massive components to Mombasa.

Within a year, Kwale Mine successfully loaded its first 25 000t shipment of ilmenite, under supervision of Bigen, at the dedicated export terminal at Likoni Port. The facility is designed to manage vessels of up to 50 000t at a loading rate of 1 000t per hour.
