eThekwini Integrated Rapid Transport Network

Challenge

The South African National Roads Agency SOC has developed an integrated rapid public transport network plan for the entire eThekwini municipal area and appointed Bigen to manage the construction of the 6,2km road in the C3B corridor through Pinetown and New Germany. The route would comprise two right-of-way lanes along the centre of Josiah Gumede, Quashana Kuzwayo and Bevis Roads. On either side of these lanes, the mixed traffic using the road would be accommodated in two lanes per direction.

Besides requiring top expertise to execute the project, the agency included in its tender requirements specific local empowerment targets for the successful contractor to achieve.

Solution

Bigen, in addition to having exceptional expertise and full capability in infrastructure development, including roads, has a standard policy of maximising local socio-economic development outcomes on all its infrastructure development projects. This is based on its corporate creed of “doing good while doing business”, which on projects means delivering long-term economic benefits to communities through local skills, enterprise and supplier development.

For this project, Bigen employed a number of community liaison officers on a full-time basis to source all labour and attend to all labour issues, to ensure that the use of local skills is maximised.
